What to Expect While Recovering from Rhinoplasty

By Clayman | October 13, 2017

A rhinoplasty is a great way to improve your appearance and get the profile you have always wanted. Learn what to expect after your rhinoplasty so you can be prepared to take the best possible care of your new nose.

Post-Surgery

Immediately after your surgery, you will be cared for in our recovery room. We will give you oral and written instruction for your post-operative care. We will also give you a prescription for medication to manage any lingering discomfort and can recommend other aftercare products to minimize swelling. We require you to bring a reliable friend or relative with you as we discuss proper aftercare and to drive you home. You can feel free to contact Dr. Clayman at any point if you have questions about your instructions.

First Weeks

Your bandages are typically removed at your first follow-up appointment during the first week after your initial surgery. After your dressings are removed, the surgery site will be thoroughly cleaned. You will need a follow-up appointment with Dr. Clayman at the two and three-week mark.

You should plan on staying home from work or normal activities for about a week, while your dressings are still in place. You may also experience some bruising or swelling. Dr. Clayman can help to clear you for light activity levels after your first follow-up. He may recommend that you avoid strenuous activities for a few extra weeks.

First Months

The first few months after your rhinoplasty are exciting: you can begin to see your new nose taking shape and watch as it refines itself over time. By the end of the first month, you should be able to return to more strenuous activities. For a few months afterward, you may experience some noticeable swelling. Swelling might be accompanied by occasional throbbing or headaches, which should be manageable with cold compresses, Tylenol or ibuprofen. Dr. Clayman may schedule another follow-up appointment after a month or two for a checkup and may recommend any further necessary aftercare products. While most of your healing will take place within the first month or two, it typically takes about 3-6 months for the results of a rhinoplasty to fully develop.

As always, it’s highly important to follow all of Dr. Clayman’s instructions for the most efficient healing. We encourage you to contact us today at 904-208-2727 to learn more about rhinoplasty and to schedule your complimentary consultations.
