What to Consider Before Having a Breast Augmentation

At Dr. Clayman’s Plastic Surgery Center and Miracle Spa, father-and- son Drs. Loren and Mark Clayman can create full, shapely and younger-looking breasts to complement your unique figure. If you’ve been looking for a way to boost your self-image, breast augmentation may be the answer for you.

There are many different factors that transform the body and can create changes to your overall appearance such as aging, major weight fluctuations and childbearing. When these lifestyle elements begin to affect the size, shape, and volume of the breasts, many women lose confidence and turn to breast enhancement for help.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to increase breast size and volume. By placing implants, our qualified clinicians can adjust breasts that are too small or disproportionate from one another. Women who have experienced a mastectomy may also benefit from breast implants.

Once your physical examinations and consultations are complete, your transformation can begin. Most patients receive general anesthesia for this procedure, but your options will be discussed with you prior to your surgery date. Your doctor will then make an incision, lift the breast tissue and place an implant in a surgically-created pocket.

After your implants have been inserted and placed, Dr. Clayman will close the surgical incisions with sutures. Following a short observation period, you will be released to go home with detailed instructions about your postoperative care.

Individual Treatment Plans

Over the years, breast surgery has seen several innovations. There are now many options to choose from, including the popular saline and silicone gel implants. The way the implants are placed can also vary, and depend greatly on the volume loss you have experienced in your natural breasts.

After a physical examination and thorough discussion, you and Dr. Clayman can decide upon the best implant, placement method and technique for an individualized breast augmentation that fits your needs. At our surgery center, your unique characteristics and lifestyle are always taken into consideration.

As with any surgical procedure though, you should consider certain factors before making the commitment. Here are some important factors to keep in mind when deciding if breast augmentation is right for you.

Not everyone is a good candidate.

It’s important to note that a breast augmentation is not ideal for everyone. If you are experiencing sagging or disproportionate breasts, you may be a good candidate. If, however, you are hoping to improve the overall positioning of your breasts by placing them higher on the chest wall, a breast lift may be a better option. Often, women wish to improve their breast shape, size, and positioning. In this case, Dr. Clayman and his team can perform both procedures simultaneously to create the best aesthetic goal possible for the patient.

Dieting and pregnancy may affect your results.

If you are planning on becoming pregnant in the near future or are trying to lose a considerable amount of weight, it’s important to discuss this with your plastic surgeon. Because pregnancy and weight-loss can alter your breast size significantly, it may affect the results of your breast augmentation. Dr. Clayman recommends stabilizing your weight before undergoing surgery.

A moderate amount of downtime is required.

When thinking about your breast augmentation, keep in mind that recovery takes time. Following the surgery, you will experience moderate pain for the first few days. Your breasts may be extremely sensitive to the touch, and you may experience warm, itchy skin near your incisions. Some discoloration and swelling are also likely. While you will feel most of the pain within the first few days, you should minimize any excessive physical activities for two to six weeks.
