The best way to maintain a fit and healthy body is through regular exercise and a nutritious diet. But the body has a way of holding on to unwanted fat in certain areas, like the belly or thighs — often, this stubborn fat won’t respond to even your best fitness efforts. If no amount of working out and eating well seems to be making a difference in these problem areas, you might be the perfect candidate for CoolSculpting.
At Dr. Clayman’s Plastic Surgery Center and Miracle Spa, we use CoolSculpting to help our clients achieve their ideal bodies. CoolSculpting offers a completely non-invasive approach to eliminating unwanted stubborn fat. Drs. Loren and Mark Clayman and our highly trained technicians have extensive experience using this cutting-edge technology, and we can help you sculpt your body in just the right ways to treat those stubborn areas. How Does CoolSculpting Work?
Some years ago, doctors discovered that our fat cells are particularly susceptible to damage when exposed to cold temperatures. Then, in the 1990s and 2000s, researchers harnessed this scientific principle into a technology called cryolipolysis — “cryo” meaning freezing, “lipo” meaning fat and “lysis” meaning dissolving — which emerged in the form of body sculpting aesthetics procedures. CoolSculpting has quickly become the gold standard for cryolipolysis treatments. The CoolSculpting device works by safely directing freezing temperatures to targeted areas of fat beneath the skin. The cold crystallizes the fat cells, which in turn stop functioning and are eliminated naturally by your body’s waste removal processes.
Since fat cells are more easily frozen than other types of cells, CoolSculpting doesn’t harm surrounding tissues like skin, nerves and blood vessels. One CoolSculpting session can reduce fat in the treated area by as much as 20 percent, with each additional treatment trimming 20 percent more. Since CoolSculpting is non-surgical and works with your body’s natural processes, you can repeat it several times for maximum results. On average, one session takes about an hour from start to finish, so you can see noticeable effects without committing to a time-consuming procedure and recovery. Everyone’s body is different, and some patients will see more improvement than others.
CoolSculpting is Ideal for Treating Stubborn Fat
When it comes to body fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise, CoolSculpting offers a targeted and effective solution. Stubborn pockets of fat can develop for different reasons, including genetics, hormones, and age. And once they appear, your body can be incredibly reluctant to shed them, even if you are able to lose fat in other areas. If you are in overall good physical shape but are frustrated by unsightly fat in unwanted places, you have likely wondered what your options are for smoothing out these unflattering areas of your physique.
To understand why CoolSculpting is so effective for stubborn fat, it’s important to note that every person has a specific number of fat cells in their body. When you gain or lose weight, these fat cells expand and contract — you don’t produce more fat cells or lose them with weight fluctuations. CoolSculpting, however, permanently reduces the number of fat cells in each treated area. Rather than using diet and exercise to merely reduce the size of fat cells in imprecise areas of your body, you can target the specific cells that are disproportionately enlarged and eliminate them completely. This has the added benefit of permanently decreasing the size of the treated areas. Even if you gain some weight, you likely won’t see those bumps and bulges return to the same extent.
CoolSculpting is currently FDA-cleared to treat stubborn fat in several areas of the body. If your concerns include pockets of fat in any of the following areas, CoolSculpting might be right for you.
The top of the hips or “love handles” are a common area for stubborn fat pockets to emerge. Fat that lodges here can be particularly difficult to target through diet and fitness, not only because it typically has a strong genetic component but also because there are few physical exercises that can adequately work this area. The CoolSculpting device includes cooling panel attachments that can envelop each hip and freeze fat tissue from multiple angles. Since love handles sit on both sides of the body, you can have them done one at a time or treat both in the same session.
The belly is notorious for holding on to fat, particularly with age or following a pregnancy. Abdominal fat was one of the first areas that CoolSculpting was able to treat, and it remains one of the most popular uses of the device. You can choose to treat upper belly fat, lower belly fat or both, depending on your aesthetic needs. Just as the name implies, a CoolSculpting treatment can “sculpt” the tummy, flattening belly pooches to give you the slimmer profile you’ve been working toward.
The undersides of the arms often start to lose their tone with age. As skin loses its elasticity, fat deposits, and gravity work together to cause unwanted arm flab. If you’re unhappy with the appearance of fat along your upper arms, CoolSculpting can help. Rather than the standard cooling panels, your provider can customize your arm treatment with a special CoolFit applicator that is designed for longer, harder-to-reach treatment areas. Each arm is treated as a separate area, so you can have both arms done at once or split it into two sessions.
For women, in particular, getting rid of unwanted fat on the thighs can be a never-ending battle. Stubborn fatty tissue tends to build on both the inner and outer thigh regions over time. This can create uncomfortable thigh chafing or the dreaded “saddle bag” look. Whether your goal is to have a thigh gap, slimmer hips or both, CoolSculpting can improve these problem areas. CoolFit applicator attachments are designed to reach around or between the legs, so you can effectively target these stubborn areas on your thighs.
The thin, fragile skin of the chin and neck is highly susceptible to sagging with age. As the fat pockets here become enlarged, they can weigh the area down and you can quickly develop an undesirable double chin or turkey neck. While liposuction and neck lift surgery can address these concerns as well, CoolSculpting offers a non-invasive way to reduce chin and neck fat. The CoolSculpting device offers another special attachment called the CoolMini that is designed specifically to fit the neck area and create a more defined, youthful jawline.
