While your lips may not look as though they are simply part of your skin, on a cellular level they are nearly identical. Your lips are susceptible to the same kinds of damage as the skin on the rest of your face — they are sensitive to sunlight, they can become dry in cold or windy weather and they show signs of aging over time. In fact, your lips are even more likely to develop lines or cracks than your other facial skin. Their naturally delicate structure combined with frequent mouth movements causes the skin of your lips to stretch and wrinkle quite easily. Also, your lips tend to lose a significant amount of volume over time, which makes wrinkles even more apparent. Thinning lips and fine lines around your mouth can age your face even if you take good care of the rest of your skin.
What Are Lip Fillers?
When you start to experience signs of aging on your lips, you might wonder what your options are for correcting them. If you are hesitant to choose a surgical option like lip implants, you may find that injectable lip fillers can offer a much easier procedure with highly effective results. Lip fillers are usually specially-formulated versions of heavier dermal fillers that are used to treat lines and wrinkles elsewhere on the face. When these dermal fillers are recreated for use on the lips, they are usually more lightweight and use smaller particles of their active ingredient. The finer texture of the resulting formula is perfect for filling in lines on your lips with precision and detail, restoring volume and smoothing your skin without leaving you looking overdone.
Are Lip Fillers Right for You?
The active ingredient in most lip fillers is hyaluronic acid, a volumizing and hydrating substance that occurs naturally in your skin. Using a natural substance to restore your lips’ fullness and texture means that lip fillers are suitable for nearly all clients and skin types — your chances of having a negative reaction to a hyaluronic acid filler are very low. Also, since lip fillers are administered as quick injections and do not require surgery or recovery time, they can be performed easily in a short appointment that will fit into any schedule. You can also choose to combine lip fillers with other procedures, including dermal fillers, a facelift, micro-needling or Botox, to enhance your overall look. The simplicity and flexibility of lip fillers mean that if you are experiencing any wrinkling and thinning of your lips, you are likely a good candidate for this kind of treatment.
Types of Lip Fillers
If you are already familiar with different brands of dermal fillers, you may recognize some of your options for lip fillers. At Dr. Clayman’s Plastic Surgery Center and Miracle Spa, we work most frequently with four different kinds of fillers for the lips, all of which use hyaluronic acid and can deliver excellent results for the right client.
Restylane’s line of injectable fillers includes the lip-specific Restylane Silk, which was the first treatment for dedicated lip enhancement to receive FDA approval. Restylane Silk uses a silkier, smoother formula with smaller particles of hyaluronic acid than Restylane’s other products. The formula ensures it can fill in the very fine, feathered lines around your lips with ease; Restylane’s heavier fillers are better for effectively filling in larger wrinkles. For most clients, the effects of Restylane Silk last about six months.
Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Volbella XC
Juvéderm is another well-known filler brand with a family of formulas designed for correcting different concerns. Ultra XC and Volbella XC are Juvéderm’s lip treatments — Ultra is used for restoring lip fullness and plumpness, while Volbella targets fine lines around the mouth. Juvéderm’s lip formulas can last up to one year depending on activity.
Belotero Balance is known for its versatility since it is FDA-approved for a few different facial skin concerns. It is often called a “starter filler” because clients can use the same formula to treat multiple areas, including the lips. If you have lip wrinkles and other lines and have never used fillers before, Belotero can be a way to ease your skin gently into the world of fillers — you can correct all your concerns without using multiple brands or formulas. The effects of Belotero Balance lasts up to four to six months.
