Neck Lift

When you pursue cosmetic surgery to reduce signs of aging, you want results that will look naturally and completely youthful. You want your appearance to be subtly yet noticeably younger — you want others to see that you look refreshed and somehow different, but you also want them to wonder what your secret is. In many cases, the key to achieving a fully rejuvenated look without any signs that you’ve had “work done” is by combining a neck lift with your other anti-aging surgeries or treatments.

A neck lift, sometimes called a lower rhytidectomy, is often the perfect procedure to bring your new look together because signs of aging on the face frequently extend to the jawline, chin and neck. Facelifts and non-invasive facial treatments cannot directly address concerns like jowls, fat pockets below the chin, lateral or vertical neck wrinkles or stretched neck muscles. These concerns can, however, significantly age the appearance. If left untreated, they will cause an unbalanced look where the face is youthful but the neck remains poorly contoured.

At Dr. Clayman’s Plastic Surgery Center and Miracle Spa, we work personally with every patient to deliver their best results with custom treatment plans and tailored techniques. Our Harvard-educated, board-certified plastic surgeons, Drs. Mark and Loren Clayman, expertly provide neck lift surgeries for patients who want to see their younger selves in the mirror again. Is a Neck Lift Right for You?

Neck lifts are best suited for men and women who are experiencing signs of aging, sun damage or related skin concerns in the area between the lower face or jawline and the collarbones. Some common concerns that are best addressed with a neck lift include:

  • Sagging skin at the jawline, or jowls
  • Submental fullness (fat below the chin)
  • A “double chin” from excess skin and fat at the top of the neck or jawline
  • Loosened platysma muscles causing a “stringy” look between the chin and collarbone
  • Horizontal wrinkles across the neck
  • Stretched, excess skin on the neck causing a “turkey wattle”

The ideal neck lift candidate is a person who will already be undergoing a facelift, as these procedures are easily combined and offer the most cohesive results when performed simultaneously. However, it is possible to perform neck lifts independently. This may be most appropriate for patients who have previously had a facelift without a neck lift, or for patients who have signs of aging that disproportionately affect their neck. To find out more, please schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Mark or Loren Clayman at our offices in Jacksonville.

Neck Lift Techniques

Neck lifts are most often outpatient surgeries performed at our state-of-the-art facility at St. Vincent’s Medical Center — Riverside Campus. We usually use general anesthesia to keep patients comfortable, particularly when the neck lift is combined with other facial procedures such as a full facelift, brow lift or lower facelift. We may use local anesthesia with sedation in some cases. You may discuss your anesthesia options with Dr. Clayman during your consultation.

During the procedure, Dr. Clayman will create small incisions hidden behind the ears and under the chin. Through these incisions, he will gain access to the underlying fat and musculature to create a smoother, more sculpted neck profile. He may remove some fat, suture neck muscles into a more lifted position or reposition pockets of fat to restore fullness to areas with volume loss. Then, he will trim away excess stretched skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, jowls or other sagging. Finally, your skin will be redraped over the neck area to create a tighter and more contoured appearance, and will be sutured into place at each of the incisions.

You will spend some time in one of our comfortable recovery rooms while your anesthesia wears off. Once we are confident that you are awake and are not experiencing any adverse reactions, we will discharge you into the care of a pre-arranged responsible adult who will drive you home.

Neck Lift Recovery

Dr. Clayman will supply you with written recovery instructions, including information on how to keep comfortable, how to clean and dress your surgical site, how to minimize scarring and how to best ensure your results are beautiful and long-lasting. For neck lift patients, we typically recommend taking 10 to 14 days away from work or other responsibilities, and about a month away from more strenuous activities like heavy lifting or cardio exercise. These timelines may shift depending on factors such as other procedures performed, your overall health and your body’s natural rate of healing. Though it can take a few months for your skin to fully settle into its new, more youthful position, you will be able to see the majority of your results within a few weeks.

You will have some visible bandaging in the area for several days, and you will likely have some swelling, redness or bruising that lasts a week or two. You may prefer to stay out of the public eye as a result. However, you should be sure to get up and move around or take short walks to promote circulation. You should also keep your head elevated while you rest. Some other normal side effects that will diminish throughout the healing process may include tenderness, changes in skin sensation, red or raised skin at the incision, feelings of tightness and changes in skin texture. If you experience pain, swelling, bleeding, bruising or oozing that seems to be worsening instead of improving, please reach out to Dr. Clayman for an evaluation right away.

With proper aftercare, your neck lift results will be incredibly long-lasting. While the initial improvements should last about ten years or so, keeping up with a home skincare routine or in-office skin treatments can ensure that your neck area always looks healthy and younger than your years. You will have a few follow-up appointments scheduled with Dr. Clayman so our team can monitor your healing process. We will also make sure that you have any necessary contact information to reach us at any time with questions or concerns.
