As one of the most expressive and exposed areas of the face, the brow is highly susceptible to losing skin elasticity and fine muscle control over time. The combination of repeated facial movements and vulnerability to the elements means that when signs of aging begin to appear, the brow is one of the first areas to show it. Lines, wrinkles, drooping muscles and sagging skin are all common complaints of men and women alike as they grow older and see their appearance change. While non-invasive options like Botox or dermal filler injections can sometimes provide improvement, these are only temporary solutions for less intensive concerns. For patients who want to commit to a more effective and long-lasting procedure, a brow lift offers exceptional results that won’t wear off.
Brow lift surgery, also called an upper facelift or a forehead lift, addresses common signs of aging across the forehead and eyebrow area. Brow lifts are designed to create smoother skin, an elevated brow and a more open and alert appearance for the eyes. A brow lift does not address concerns related to the midface, lower face or neck. It is, however, commonly combined with other facial procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) or completed as part of a full facelift.

Is a Brow Lift Right for You?
Brow lifts are ideal for men and women who are experiencing sagging skin, muscle and tissues across the forehead due to aging, sun and environmental damage or a combination of the two. These concerns may take the form of:
- Transverse (horizontal) forehead lines
- Vertical frown lines or “eleven lines” between the eyebrows
- A sagging brow that lowers the upper eyelids
Brow lift candidates typically have a characteristic heaviness in their brow that causes their eyes to appear hooded or partially closed. If these concerns are accompanied by drooping eyelids or puffy undereye bags, we will likely recommend combining your brow lift with eyelid surgery. For patients who also have signs of aging around the cheeks, nose and mouth, best results may be achieved with combined brow and facelift techniques. To find out for certain whether a brow lift is right for you, you will need to meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon for an in-person evaluation. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Mark or Loren Clayman at our offices in Jacksonville to take your next steps.
Brow Lift Techniques
Drs. Mark and Loren Clayman perform brow lifts as outpatient procedures at our surgical facility in Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood. Most patients receive general anesthesia, especially if their surgical plan includes a combination of treatments. Local anesthesia is available and may be used in some instances. Dr. Clayman can let you know more about your options during your consultation.
The brow lift procedure uses small incisions at the top of the forehead and hidden within the hairline. Dr. Clayman accesses the underlying brow structures through these incisions, manipulating muscles and skin for a smoother and more lifted appearance. He will carefully ensure that muscles remain intact to allow for full brow mobility, and will ensure that you retain a natural, even facial symmetry on both sides of your brow. Finally, he will trim away any loose or excess skin, and then he uses small sutures to anchor the brow in its new position.
We will monitor you in an onsite recovery room for an hour or two until your anesthesia wears off. Once you are awake and we have confirmed that you are not experiencing any immediate adverse reactions, you will be able to return home to begin your recovery. You will need to have a pre-arranged responsible party (an adult friend or family member) present at discharge to sign you out and drive you home.
Brow Lift Recovery
Every patient’s recovery is slightly different based on their particular surgical plan, their overall health and their body’s natural healing processes. As you work with Dr. Clayman, he will help you get an idea of what to expect from your personal recovery. We will also provide you with instructions on how to best care for yourself as you heal. Carefully following Dr. Clayman’s instructions is essential to ensuring that you do not experience complications and that your results heal well and last for many years.
In general, brow lift patients can expect to need between 7 and 10 days away from work or usual daily activities, and another 3 or 4 weeks away from strenuous activities like exercising.
You will have some facial bandaging for a few days and will have visible redness, swelling and bruising, so most patients prefer to stay home until their appearance has improved. Some other normal side effects that will diminish throughout the healing process may include sensitivity or tenderness, numbness or tingling, raised skin at the incision site and a tight feeling in the forehead. If you experience unmanageable pain, excessive bleeding or oozing at your incisions, please reach out to Dr. Clayman for an evaluation right away. You will visit our offices a few more times during your recovery for follow-up appointments with Dr. Clayman. At these visits, our team will track your progress and clear you to resume certain activities when appropriate. You will also have contact information for our office and for Dr. Clayman, so you can reach us at any time should questions or concerns arise.
Brow lifts are designed to last almost a lifetime. While the surgery cannot stop the aging process, it can reset the clock and keep you looking younger over time. For best results, Dr. Clayman can recommend a skincare routine or in-office skin treatments that will keep your skin healthy, smooth and youthful and reduce the need for further surgical procedures.
