If you’re considering a body sculpting procedure, you have probably noticed that there are several options to choose from: we are living in a time when the fields of body sculpting and fat reduction are going through significant technological advances. In addition to more intensive body-focused cosmetic surgeries, Dr. Clayman’s Plastic Surgery Center & Miracle Spa offers two of the most popular body contouring techniques on the market: CoolSculpting and liposuction. While both procedures seem similar at first glance, there are several points you should consider before deciding which one will be most effective for you.
Before you decide which body sculpting procedure is right for you, ask yourself this question: what am I hoping to accomplish? Do you have specific deposits of fat on your body that you want to see reduced, or do you have several areas of concern? CoolSculpting and liposuction are both highly successful procedures, but work best in their own ways.
CoolSculpting uses a cooling mechanism to freeze specific areas of fat. This collapses and/or injures the frozen fat cells and triggers your body’s natural processes of cell elimination to reduce fat over a period of two to six months. The cooling technology used is precise to ensure that it’s working most effectively on the area you are hoping to reduce. This means that it works best on very localized areas of fat — love handles or a roll on the lower abdomen, for example.
Liposuction, on the other hand, is a surgical procedure in which a small incision is made, and a siphoning tool is inserted into your body’s pockets of fat to remove the unwanted fat tissue. Since liposuction works on a larger scale, it may require more than one incision, but can eliminate larger areas of fat in a shorter amount of time. If you have multiple areas of fat you’d like to reduce, or simply a larger amount of fat, liposuction might be a better choice. As always, it is best to consult one or our board certified plastic surgeons to help you determine what is right for you.
The biggest difference between CoolSculpting and liposuction is that liposuction is a surgery and requires rest and recovery. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure with little to no downtime, allowing patients to resume normal activity right away. If you are typically very busy — perhaps you have a demanding job or a young family — you might consider CoolSculpting. However, if you are very committed to your body sculpting journey and are prepared to dedicate a few extra days to healing, liposuction could be a great fit.
Evidence shows that CoolSculpting is most effective when used in conjunction with a typically active lifestyle. When your body is already very healthy, the cells that CoolSculpting freezes will be eliminated more quickly. Since CoolSculpting is more effective on smaller deposits of fat, it’s a great option if you are already in good shape and just looking to get rid of those last stubborn areas of fat. Additionally, if you continue to eat well and exercise alongside your CoolSculpting sessions, the areas of fat that are reduced won’t expand again in the future.
Liposuction is also most effective long-term when paired with a healthy lifestyle. It’s important to try to lose fat through diet and exercise before considering a body sculpting procedure. However, due to a variety of factors like genetics and overall health, diet and exercise aren’t always enough to achieve the body you want. Liposuction can be a great way to kick your healthy lifestyle into high gear if you feel discouraged and need a boost.
